Dental Crowns

Damaged or missing teeth can cause both functional and aesthetic issues for patients, including difficulty chewing, misalignment, sensitivity, and lowered self-confidence. Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps designed protect a damaged tooth, or replace a missing tooth when combined with a dental implant. Dr. Pramod Thomas in Richardson, TX, works with a trusted lab to create crowns with exceptional durability and aesthetics.

Are You a Good Candidate for Dental Crowns?

Crowns may be recommended if you have:

  • Decayed or damaged teeth
  • Severe discoloration that will not respond to teeth whitening
  • Weakened teeth
  • Undergone root canal treatment that requires restoration
  • A single missing tooth

Before placing your crowns, we will also assess your oral health to ensure that your crowns are placed on a stable, healthy foundation. Any gum disease or other issues must be resolved before we can place your crown. The use of digital x-rays and an intraoral camera help us to conduct a thorough assessment of your needs.

Function Meets Aesthetics

Each crown is customized to look entirely natural while helping you chew and enunciate properly.

Creating and Placing Crowns

Once your teeth have been treated (or your dental implant is in place and surrounding tissues have healed), one of our doctors will take impressions of your smile. These impressions will then be sent to a trusted offsite lab, where a skilled ceramist will craft your restoration. Once your crowns are ready for placement - usually within two weeks - you will return to have them placed. Your dentist will make certain that the fit is correct and that your bite is comfortable. Any necessary adjustments can be made at this time.

We are dedicated to our patients' health and satisfaction, and you can depend on us to provide a solution designed for maximum long-term benefits.

Depending on the location of your affected tooth and your preferences, we can provide crowns made entirely of porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or gold. While all-porcelain crowns are usually recommended for front teeth, crowns made partially or entirely of metal are often recommended to restore back teeth.

Implant-Supported Crowns

In the past, dental bridges were the most common solution for single missing teeth. However, with the advent of the dental implant, many patients choose to replace single teeth with implant-supported crowns. While traditional bridges can certainly restore function and aesthetics, they require the alteration of healthy adjacent teeth that serve to restore the bridge. Traditional bridge wearers also experience eventual bone recession below the restoration, a natural result of missing tooth roots.

Dental implants are the only means of halting bone recession after tooth loss. Meanwhile, since the implant will support the crown, there is no need to alter healthy teeth. If you need to replace a single tooth, Dr. Wilner Loiseau can assess your candidacy for dental implants.
